M Visvesvaraya was honoured with Bharat Ratna
Engineer’s day is dedicated to the country’s great engineer Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. He made a significant contribution in the construction of dams, reservoirs and hydroelectric projects of modern India. In recognition of his contribution, the Government of India honored him with the Bharat Ratna in the year 1955.
Major roles in various works
Bharat Ratna awardee M Visvesvaraya was born on 15 September 1861 in a Telugu family in Kolar district of Mysore. His father Srinivasa Shastri was a Sanskrit scholar and a doctor of Ayurveda. He obtained a degree in civil engineering from the Science College, Poona in 1883. He is also called the father of Modern Mysore because of the modern development work done by M Visvesvaraya in Mysore. He played an important role in the construction of Krishnaraj Sagar Dam in Mandya district. Dr. Mokshagundam died in the year 1962 at the age of 102.
