Main Difference between IAS and IPS
First difference: IPS officers are always in uniform during their duty. Whereas there is no uniform for IAS officers. They are dressed like civilians.
Second difference: One policeman stays with the IAS officer at all times as a bodyguard. While the IPS officer has the entire Police Force with him.
IAS Vs. IPS: Training after Passing the Exam
All candidates selected for different civil services including IAS and IPS, first undergo a common training programme, which is considered as foundation course. It is conducted for few months at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNA) in Mussoorie.
After that, specialised training is imparted which is directly related to the role and responsibility which the civil servants have to undertake on being posted. Specialised training for IAS officers is imparted at LBSNA itself, while IPS officers are sent to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad.
Training for IPS also includes rigorous physical training.
IAS Vs. IPS: Primary Responsibilities
For an IPS officer, the primary responsibility is to maintain law and order, and also to stop criminal activities in or around the district in which he/she is posted.
On the other hand, an IAS officer is not only responsible for public administration but also policy formulation and implementation in the district in which he/she is posted.
IAS Vs. IPS: Salary
As per the 7th pay commission, IAS officer’s salary is in the range of Rs. 56,100 – 2.5 lakh per month, depending on the number of years in service. IPS officer’s salary is Rs 56,100 – 2.25 lakh per month, again depending on the number of years in service. In addition to monetary compensation, both IAS and IPS get several other perks and allowances.
IAS Vs. IPS: Career Prospects
IAS officers are entrusted with the responsibility of very important posts in the Central and State governments. An IAS officer can reach the rank of Chief Secretary while serving in a State Government and Cabinet secretary while serving in the Central Government.
On the other hand, IPS officers hold important responsibilities in the State and Central Police forces. IPS officers serving in the State Police can reach to the post of Director General of Police and can reach to the post of Director while serving in Central Police Service.
It is to be noted that IAS holds the highest rank among all Civil Services.
